What kinds of toppings do you like on your pizza?
Hamburger, olives, and pepperoni (the “HOP”). I also enjoy cheese, vegetables, and herbs on my pizza,
like tomatoes, mozzarella cheese, fresh basil, and bell peppers.
What is one skill people would be surprised you have?
I am not sure my ability rises to the level of “skilled,” but I do know how to skateboard. No tricks, but I simply like to coast and do my best not to fall.
If you had a talk show, who would be your first guest?
I would invite Bishop Robert Barron. Bishop Barron’s books and other materials have helped me grow in my understanding of the beauty, goodness, and truth of the Catholic Church. He has the ability to clearly respond to the issues and questions of whomever he is engaged with regardless of background and does so with charity.
What is your favorite line from a Eucharistic prayer?
Currently, my favorite is from the preface of Eucharistic Prayer II: “It is truly right and just, our duty and our salvation, always and everywhere to give you thanks, Father most holy, through your beloved Son, Jesus Christ, your Word through whom you made all things, whom you sent as our Savior and Redeemer, incarnate by the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin.” This line neatly encapsulates the core truths of our faith and calls us to thanksgiving and action before we receive Jesus Christ in the Eucharist.
How would you advise someone who wanted to deepen their love of the Eucharist?
Ask the Lord in prayer for an increased love of the Eucharist. If possible, hold a weekly Holy Hour with the Blessed Sacrament at a local church or adoration chapel. Jesus, the Word made flesh, still dwells among us in the Eucharist, so go to him with all your joys and sufferings, hopes and fears, or simply take rest in his presence. To the extent possible, increase Mass attendance, perhaps starting with attending one (or more) daily Masses during the week.
Pray over the sixth chapter of St. John’s Gospel, in which Jesus said, “I am the living bread which came down from heaven; if any one eats of this bread, he will live forever; and the bread which I shall give for the life of the world is my flesh.” Lastly, with the current National Eucharistic Revival in the U.S., there is an increasing number of materials being made available to better understand the Church’s profession of the Real Presence of Jesus Christ in the Eucharist, so I encourage you to search for books, videos, or audio that interest you.
When you envision yourself celebrating Mass one day as a priest, what do you imagine will be going through your mind and heart?
In the celebration of the Eucharist, bread and wine become the Body and Blood, Soul, and Divinity of Jesus Christ through the power of the Holy Spirit and the instrumentality of the priest. I imagine there will be many things on my mind and heart when celebrating Mass one day as a priest, mostly in the realm of praise, love, gratitude, and wonder.
Praise, for the amazing truth that God so desires communion with his children that he comes to each of
us under the humble appearance of bread and wine at each Holy Mass.
Love, for the beauty of the Lord continuing to give himself in both Word and Sacrament to his flock coming to receive him, and thanksgiving for being an instrument in his hands through which he works to accomplish this.
Desire, that those at Mass continue to open their hearts to his unfathomable love and mercy, so that we all can continue to discern and follow whatever God wills in our lives through our participation.
Joy, in celebrating our Savior’s victory over sin and death. Wonder, of the great tradition of the Mass, currently advancing the mission of the Church which began long ago and will continue after my earthly
pilgrimage concludes.
Which saint should people invoke for your vocation? St. Thérèse of Lisieux. Her autobiography, “Story of a Soul,” moved me and brought me closer to Jesus.
Please pray that St. Thérèse may continue to guide me to a deeper love of Jesus.
